What about the covers? no 15

For 2009 - The Hidden Cameras - Origin:Orphan

Designed by Robyn Kotyk (graphic artist nominated for Juno for her work) and Joel Gibb (the band's leader), the Hidden Cameras' Origin:Orphan cover's symbolism is blatantly obvious. The orphan and the camera are in plain sight, connected to each other, marking our Orwellian era of constant camera watching. Arts and Crafts, the label that released the album is a design house too, and their aesthetic is consistent to all their releases and merchandise. Photography by Guntar Kravis (the second photo is by Norman Wong and not on the album, but it expresses perfectly the gay church music tag that Gibb gives his songs).

For the 00's - no15 - Roisin Murphy - Overpowered

The art direction and design for this one was done by Scott King, with photography by Jonathan de Villiers. King's characteristic "album-title-as-sticky-label" mark is here again. Quirky and fashion-forward as always. Roisin is certainly no wallflower. Her look is always unique and original. The inner sleeve is pink inside and blue outside, with a graphic that incorporates various quotes from Roisin and people she gets inspired from. I would have been happier with the lyrics and more photos of Roisin though.

Top 20 Countdown - no.15

For 2009

No.15 - The Hidden Cameras - Origin:Orphan

Strange album title. But oh, what an album it is. From the opening drone that segues into the eastern-inspired Ratify The New to the guitar ballad almost retro sound of Silence Can Be A Headline (oh how appropriate a title for today), it sucks you right in and never lets you out. Brilliant music.

No.15 - Roisin Murphy - Overpowered

She's one of the most talented women in music today. A great album that makes you dance like there is no tomorrow, much like her live gigs too. Roisin proved with this one that she can make her own mark in music, after the Moloko break up. I never doubted it of course!

Poplie radio show, Sunday 18 October 2009

Click on the image to see the playlist

Second show on Poplie last Sunday and I think I am getting the hang of it. The first hour was more acoustic, second hour was more dance/electronic with the new tracks of Roisin Murphy presented at the Viktor & Rolf Spring/Summer 2010 fashion show this month being the absolute highlight. So join me every Sunday at noon for more. You can download the whole radio show from the right column of this blog.

Miss Murphy, I'm Overpowered!

How can one describe the sheer force of this woman? How can one even begin to describe the diva herself? After having missed her Synch Festival appearance (Monika as well) last summer, I was determined not to miss seeing Roisin Murphy live when the opportunity came. And it did. On the eve of my name day celebration. And it was the best gift ever!

The concert started with the support act, Marsheaux, a local electronica band, perfectly fitting with the main act. But with everyone waiting for Roisin to appear, they had no chance. Their set was great and they deserve your attention. At one point Roisin passed in front of us, entering the venue (I was at the front line with Cookiebasher and Erisabetsu). Excitement grew tenfold, and soon the Marsheaux ladies left the stage.

The band soon appeared, taking their places, the wonderful ladies doing the vocals entered the stage with a robotic pace and, lo and behold, Roisin entered after them, causing delirium in the adoring crowd. She started with Overpowered, her first single from her latest album of the same name, wearing one of her eccentric surrealistic outfits as usual (the rack with her outfits is always on stage and she changes between songs or during them, making it a part of the spectacle - superb!).

She was so close to us it felt very intimate - I was under the impression she was singing especially for me! A human dynamo, singing, dancing, performing, Roisin gave her best self to us and we gave back love and adoration - no one stopped dancing throughout!

The middle of the concert was kind of acoustic, not in an unplugged kind of style but she performed some songs without heavy drums and beats, making them even more special. And having her sit in front of you singing is simply breathtaking! Shaking her hand was obviously exciting!

She performed not only her own songs (three from her first album, Ruby Blue) but also some of her former band, Moloko: It's Nothing, I Want You, Dr. Zee, I Can't Help Myself, Pretty Bridges, The ID) and the amazing Slave to Love (by Bryan Ferry) which was featured in a Gucci ad.

Extra kudos must got to the amazing band of hers and of course the two ladies doing back up vocals and dancing with her, they were superb (special mention must go to the drummer!).

After the concert, we were lucky to meet Roisin in person - she was very kind and accepting, despite having performed a very exhausting concert and signed the set list for me and Cookie. So, while others post Kalomira autographed posters (;-P), here is the Roisin setlist with her autograph and kiss!!! And, as the venue later opened as a club, she stayed on and danced with her group - awesome!

Music makes the world go round....

Tonight I'm DJ-ing as every Wednesday at Cafe Nikis 35 in Thessaloniki, but tomorrow and Friday we have two amazing ladies singing for us:

Thursday night at Mylos stage we have Monika in concert.

...then Friday night the Queen of Disco, Roisin Murphy, sings at Vilka Area. What more can I ask as a gift for my name celebration day (Saturday)? Perfection!

P.S. I know the Roisin poster is from the Athens concert but I cannot find the local one. And while Monika's poster looks great - designed by Ant with photo by T-drom (excluding her profile sketch which I still don't like), Roisin's is looking a hack job at best...

2007 Top-20 Countdown - No.7

Best Albums of 2007 - No.7

Roisin Murphy - Overpowered

Ex-Moloco singer Roisin Murphy gave us a precious gem this year, with her second album. A surreal piece of dance music, infused with paranoia, melancholia, not to mention energy and fun. For me it is one of the best records to play at a party, a sure-fire way to make people dance - you cannot stay seated when you listen to these songs. With her eclectic team of producers (among them my favourites, Groove Armada) and songwriters (with her at the lead of course), she manages to assemble a brilliant necklace of pure dance pop diamonds, the likes of which are the envy of many wanna-be dance divas the world over. We will wait breathlessly for the next one.

P.S. Her Mad-Hater look is pure genius, I wish more singers would follow her suit...

Debbie Harry - Necessary Evil

Has it really been fifteen years since Debbie last released a personal album? Maybe she should have thought better. It does not do her justice, appearing with an album like this, tarnishing her image of new wave queen, the woman that has inspired many of today's fledglings. It sounds messy, confused, overwhelmed. Maybe next time she should stay home. An unnecessary album if ever there was one.
